Festival Identity

A school project where we have to create an identity for a made up festival. I chose to create an identity for the Korean American Literature Festival.

Custom Typeface

I first created a font that was based on traditional Korean typographic elements, looking at specifically seal scripts (a Korean style of calligraphy) and dojangs (personal name stamps that used to serve as signatures). The Korean alphabet is traditionally monospaced and geometric in form, and I felt that the seal script and the dojangs really embodied those things.

Square-based, monospaced, geometric yet organically-ornate, this font clearly references traditional Korean elements while also remaining modern in appearance.

Poster Sketches

The next step was to create a series of posters to advertise the event. I created three rough drafts and with each one I tried to explore three different directions.

The red color and the rectangular frames were references to dojangs (Korean stamps). Dojangs traditionally use red ink and when they are stamped, they usually create a square frame around them. I thought emphasizing this relationship to dojangs was really important to the identity of the festival, so I decided to continue developing the middle poster which embodied this idea the best.

Final Posters

I wanted to use a sans-serif font in order to balance out the ornate custom font I was using. I ultimately ended up choosing Futura for my secondary font as its geometric form made it suitable here.
